Southern Galactic: Textile Art Workshop presented by Artist Willoughby Hastings

In celebration of the renowned jazz musician, Sun Ra, join us for our Afro-futurist inspired textile and sign workshop. This is a walk-in class. No registration required.

In celebration of the renowned jazz musician, Sun Ra, join us for our Afro-futurist inspired textile and sign workshop. During this workshop, we will be appliqueing stars and Saturn planets onto t-shirts and readying cardboard signs for the Southern Galactic parade held May 21st in Big Spring Park. Southern Galactic is a multidisciplinary event honoring founding Afrofuturist Sun Ra and his connections to "The Rocket City" Huntsville.

The artist and presenter, Willoughby, is taking donations of fabric and cardboard and these can be dropped off during workshop hours or by appointment by emailing spaceisourplacehsv@gmail.com

Southern Galactic is a multidisciplinary event honoring founding Afrofuturist Sun Ra and his connections to "The Rocket City" Huntsville. The event is produced by Huntsville visual artists Jahni Moore and Willoughby Lucas Hastings and is scheduled for May 19th - May 22nd, 2023. Southern Galactic will include history and aeronautics presentations, public workshops, musical performances, an outdoor walking parade, and a screening of John Coney, Joshua Smith, and Sun Ra's film Space is the Place, as well as contemporary Afrofuturist visual artist Cauleen Smith's video performance Space, is the Place: A March for Sun Ra. Southern Galactic is funded in part by project grants from the Verdant Fund and the Alabama Council on the Arts with additional support from United Women of Color, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Maitland Conservatory, the North Huntsville Public Library, and Huntsville Revisited Museum.
