Freedom in Fanfiction: Pursuing the Goal of Publishing

In this class, aspiring authors will explore how the skills developed through writing fanfiction can translate into creating and publishing original stories. Using successful examples such as Fifty Shades of Grey, participants will learn how to move from writing within an established fictional world to developing original characters, settings, plots, and voices of their own. The session will also cover practical steps for preparing a manuscript for publication, including revising, understanding the publishing process, and navigating the transition from fanfiction writer to published author.

Lila Ivester is a writer of historical LGBTQ fiction, and the author of Artistic Differences. She has taught writing workshops at Savannah College of Art and Design and is currently writing professionally for a private company.
