A family started by two mixed race people - a male indentured servant and a slave women - resulted in a family whose very physical appearance forced Huntsville to confront issues of race, ethnicity and class.

Living in the margins and on the edges of Huntsville, the Conley Family shaped their civic identity with character and values. Their decision to leverage spiritual, intellectual, artistic and athletic pursuits was both a shield and a sword against unconscious bias.
