Charles Hamilton Conley was a World War I veteran, following in his father footsteps as a trusted soldier under the command of General John J. Pershing. His life was a human map of America's struggles with racial identity and unconscious bias.

Charles' ethnic identity in government records changed with each state it was recorded, beginning with his birth in New Mexico. In this discussion, we will unravel the mystery of Charles Hamilton Conley, "the man who wasn't there."
