After his father is killed in the Spanish Civil War, a boy is relocated to a war-torn orphanage haunted by a spectral child. An encounter with the ghost starts the boy on a quest to uncover the secret of his death, while the spiral of death and greed unleashed by the war cause the already haunted orphanage to grow even more so.
Guillermo del Toro, the writer and director, would later return to the Spanish Civil War in his film set during its aftermath, Pan’s Labyrinth, and go on to win Best Picture and Best Director Oscars for The Shape of Water.
