The Host (South Korea, 2006)

Several years after toxic chemicals are dumped into the Han river, Seoul is suddenly besieged by a grotesque amphibious monster; when it abducts a young girl, her family rallies together to rescue her, but must contend against both the monster itself and the heavy-handed and inept government response.

Directed by Bong Joon-ho, who won three Oscars for directing, producing, and writing the film Parasite, The Host is one of the most critically acclaimed monster movies ever made (in fact, the original Korean title Gwoemul literally means “Monster”).
