August’s film will be from the 2010s: Perks of Being a Wallflower
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a 2012 American coming-of-age drama written and directed by Stephen Chbosky, based on his novel of the same name. The film stars Logan Lerman as Charlie, a quiet and observant high school freshman navigating adolescence while carrying the weight of past trauma and deep sensitivity. When he befriends seniors Sam and Patrick, played by Emma Watson and Ezra Miller, Charlie is drawn into a world of friendship, music, and self-discovery that helps him begin to feel seen and understood. Through letters, late-night drives, and moments of emotional honesty, the film explores themes of identity, mental health, belonging, and the lasting impact of human connection. Known for its introspective tone and heartfelt performances, The Perks of Being a Wallflower remains a resonant portrait of growing up and learning to participate in life rather than simply observe it.
