Coming from Ireland and Nigeria: In America (2002)
Still recovering from a devastating family tragedy, a struggling Irish actor, his wife, and his two young daughters move to New York City. As he struggles to find steady work and come to terms with his grief, his daughters view the city as a wonderland and befriend their neighbor, a reclusive artist from Nigeria.
In America was directed by Jim Sheridan and written by Sheridan and his two daughters, who loosely based it on their own experiences of moving to New York City from Ireland (by way of Canada). Starring Paddy Considine, Samantha Morton, and Djimon Honsou, In America received Academy Award nominations for Best Actress (Morton), Best Supporting Actor (Honsou), and Best Screenplay.
Coming to America – A Film Series
This film series shares four different tales of coming to America: a military thriller about political defection to the U.S., a fish-out-of-water dramedy in the Midwest, a drama about a family seeking opportunity and healing in New York City, and a romantic drama about two childhood friends meeting again far from their birthplace.
