On the Waterfront (USA, 1954) [PG]
A former prize fighter turned dock worker witnesses a murder committed on the orders of his union bosses, a crime which he unknowingly aided, and must decide whether to continue to keep his head down or stand up against those responsible, including his own brother.
In the 27th Academy Awards, On the Waterfront won Best Picture, Best Director [Elia Kazan], Best Actor [Marlon Brando], Best Supporting Actress [Eva Marie Saint], Best Story and Screenplay [Budd Schulberg], as well as Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. Leonard Bernstein’s music, his only purely instrumental film score, was nominated but did not win.
Labor Daze
A series of films about American laborers from the 1910s to the 1980s: on the docks, in the fields, putting their lives on the line and working to build a better life for themselves and their loved ones.
