A Matter of Life and Death (United Kingdom, 1946)

When a British pilot leaps from his burning plane without a parachute, he is astonished to find he has survived, but soon a heavenly messenger appears to inform him that his survival is a mistake and that he must justify his remaining alive in a celestial court of law.

The British Film Institute ranked A Matter of Life and Death 20th in their list of the 100 greatest British films of all time, and it is ranked 78th in Sight and Sound’s Greatest Films of All Time list from 2022.
