Stories We Tell - A Film Series
Monday, August 17, 2026 5:30 p.m. – 7:45 p.m.
Little Big Man (1970)
As a researcher is interviewing the last living survivor of Custer’s Last Stand, the wily 121-year-old recounts the entirety of his life in the form of a freewheeling tall tale. Throughout all of his adventures – from gunslinger to tracker to assistant snake oil salesman – his path keeps intertwining with that of the Cheyenne, the tribe who rescued him as a boy and raised him as one of their own, and their chief, his foster father.
Little Big Man was directed by Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde) and written by Calder Willingham (The Graduate), based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Berger. Starring Dustin Hoffman, Faye Dunaway, Richard Mulligan, and Martin Balsam, the film’s most iconic performance may be from Chief Dan George, who received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at that year’s Academy Awards.
Due to film length, the pre-film presentation will start at 5:25 and the film will start right at 5:30.
Stories We Tell – A Film Series
This film series focuses on storytellers and how the stories they tell reflect, distort, or influence the world around both the teller and the listener, from bedside book readings to tall tales, improvised epics to implausible autobiographies.
